  1. Diet is affected by what crops are available. Most cultures base their diet on some type of grain. Since corn is not natinve to the pacific, and wheat does not grow as well, the basic crop is rice which is abundant and grows well in that environment. But it is a very labor intensive crop and requires lots of people especially in a traditional setting. Because of this it is a social activity. Entire villages are needed to irrigate fields and plant the seedlings.
