autism????? I've been reading so much about autism and about the the different views on the links to the vaccines. But are there any reports on children who have autism and have not been vaccinated?
How can I help a child with autism manage his behaviour? I am a preschool teacher in an integrated childcare centre, and I have a child with autism in my class. I have never worked closely with a child with autism before, and he seems to have trouble managing his behaviour. He mainly hits, kicks, and pushes the other children. What strategies can I use to help him learn other methods of expressing his upset with the other children?
What questions should the money for autism research address? Would you be interested in finding if there is a relationship between paternal age and autism currently in the US? What specific questions do you want answered? Do you want pre-natal testing worked on? Dear SpecEdtch, . We need to get the data. You know how horrible the situation is for these kids and yet people keep ignoring the father's age issue. It is not fair to to be so cavalier about the risks of later fathering because the parents are not the ones who have such agonizing lives. We now know that sperm mutate. If guys want to become fathers late I think they should banks their semen in their 20s. I hope you speak out, because you know a lot about the realities. I wish you the best in your work. Maybe you could write a book about your experience because someone has to tell it like it is. It is not to make anyone feel guilty but to make people aware of reality. Dear basketcase Thank you, it is very exciting. In a 1980 study of autism in Sweden 34 was the mean age of the fathers and at that time this mean age was much older than the fathers is the non -affected group. I hope a lot of money goes to programs to help these kids as they grow up. But we may need to re-think what is an older father. Certainly 32 seems quite young now-a days. Alex
What evidence supports the assumption that autism can not be cured? I'm curious. I've always believed that autism can be corrected (perhaps cured is not the appropriate word). . . we just don't have the means to do so yet. There has been tremendous success in mainstreaming high functioning autistic children and I think it is just a matter of time before the medical and educational community comes up with a better way to teach lower functioning children. However, many do not agree . . .
Can a person with autism successfully get a girlfriend and have a successful relationship? I have autism, and i would like to find a girlfriend (not online), but since i have autism, it makes it very difficult, does anyone know any good ways on how to get a girlfriend? Do i have to befriend her first? This is a serious question, no meant to be funny. I am really struggling here. And when i get a girlfriend, how should i treat her? How do i know if they have a boyfriend(s)? How do i know if they secretly like me?
What is your opinion on the case of autism linked to childhood vaccinations? Will the ruling in the case that makes a link between autism and childhood vaccines change your mind about getting your children vaccinated or will you continue to get the vaccinations anyway? What is your opinion on the case? Do you believe there is really a link? I'm not stating whether I agree there is a link or not. I am only looking for your opinion.
What is the autism rate in the Silicon Valley? I've looked everywhere and every source I find simply says that the US rate is 1 in 150 and the Silicon Valley rate is "much higher." How much higher? What IS the actual rate of autism in that area? And what source has the *actual number*?
Why do people believe Autism is related to immunizations? Would to like to hear oppinions on why some people believe Austim is related to routine childhood vaccinations. I have identical twin boys who have had the same vaccines in the same enviroment, and have ate the same foods (bc I have heard also there is a theory about chemicals used to preserve food contributing to Autism). The first born twin has high-fuctioning Asperger's Syndrome, and the second born does not have any form of Autism. Based on this experience I don't believe Vaccines had anything to do with this. If I had to venture a guess for the cause I would say that it may be an area of his brain did not develop correctly. Anyway, would love to hear oppinions on this subject, what you believe might be a cause of Autism, or other reasons why you may choose to not vaccinate your child. Thanks. Would like to add that they were tested, and confirmed as being identical. Also that they were born at 29wks premature, and were on the same devolpment level at birth, and through their stay at the NICU.
What do you think about vaccinating infants and the risk of autism? My baby is 6 weeks old and scheduled for her first vaccinations in two weeks. I've read a lot about the link between vaccines and autism lately, and was looking for some more opinions. Does anyone know of the most recent data, have a personal experience, or just an opinion? thanks!
What is the recent findings about autism and vaccinations? I am confused at what to do. I hear such mixed evidence out there re: whether or not I should vaccinate my son. He is 11 months old and is due for his MMR next month. I do believe in vaccinations but I also read so much about a possible link between vaccinations and autism. Not to mention my nephew was fine until his one year vaccination and now is autistic. I might choose to wait until his immune system is stronger. Just wondering what I should do....
Where can I find a good autism support group in California? My 4 1/2 year old has a mild case. Sometimes I feel like I'm loosing my mind. I'm not sure how to handle certain things. For example, he is acting more aggresivley at school then at home and besides that he is still not all the way potty trained. Of course there is more....I just don't know what to do and I feel bad for complaining sometimes because it's not a severe case of autism. I live in southern California near the victorville area...any suggestions would be great.
What are signs of autism in children at the age of one? My son is 14 months old and when he gets mad he will hit. We have tried everything from time out to telling him no but he will just laugh and hit again. Anyways someone i work with today has a son who is three and was just diagnosed with autism she told me that he always hits and does not listen and that my son probably has it as well. What are real signs of autism? I really don't think he has autism for he talks, makes eye contact and loves to give kisses and hugs.
What is the salary range for professionals who work with children with autism? I live in California. I'd like to know how much researchers and therapists who work with children with autism make per year if they have a BA degree. A masters degree? A doctorate? If there's any other information needed to answer this question please let me know. I'm just looking for a basic pay scale per year.
What are the genetic influences of having a child with Autism? Hello, I was wondering, what are the chances of having a child with autism are if a person has one sibling and one half-sibling with high-functioning autism? To make it interesting, let's say I have a cousin with Aspergers' Syndrome, and my partner has the siblings with autism. Both of us are very healthy, but we're concerned about having a child with austism and/or aspergers'.
How do you explain autism to a seven year old? I have a 50 something year old friend that has an autistic brother whom my 7 year old daughter met today and promptly asked me "Mommy, what's autism?" How do I explain this in a way that does not dehumanize the autistic person, ie, as malfunctioning.
How much care do kids with autism on army bases receive? My daughter and her family will be living on base sometime in 2008 (don't know which one yet), and they have a 5 year old boy with autism. How much care does the army provide for a special needs child? I know it will vary bases to base, but what is the overall concern and resources allowed and used in this situation? Any one been there?
How do I teach my children to interact with an autism child? My neighbours son has autism. The only difference between him and my boys is that he has a speech delay and are somewhat agressive. He is 4 and my boys is 6 and 4. I really want my boys to interact with him and play with him, but find it hard to explain to them why he sometimes hurt them. We reached a point were they do not want to play with him and I feel really sad about it. My neighbour is lovely but I can see in her eyes that although she understands it is painfull. Does anyone has advise?
If the MMR vaccine has never contained mercury, why is it called the autism vaccine? Is there something else in it that has been linked to autism? I heard something about vaccine-induced measles virus being found in the brain and intestines of a 9 year-old autistic boy. I only want answers from people who know why MMR is attributed to autism, not from people who deny it. That's not because I don't want to listen to reason. It's just that I know that side already and am just interested in why MMR is linked to autism when it never had thimerisol.
What does an autism evaluation consist of? How long does it take? My two year old is getting evaluated for autism and I want to know what to expect. He is already in speech therapy. His speech therapist said she sees no signs of autism but I still want him tested no matter what anyone says. What I mean by "no matter what' is everyone one I know including his speech therapist says "no way" he has autism. He had no symptoms that I read about but I just want "piece of mind"
Where should our family move to get the best autism support and services? Right now we live in Maine and the schools are terrible. We have 2 children with autism and one without. We are in search of a state that has good autism programs, schools, and where the state will cover the therapy costs (i.e. a ketie beckett program). I also would like the state to have long term care facilities for older children/adults with autism should we ever need them in the future. A thriving job economy would be good too, my husband is a network engineer and would need to be able to find a job asap. Any help is appricitated!
How long will the leaders of this country ignore the autism epidemic? When will people stop shrugging autism off as better diagnosis? Any intelligent person knows that autism is not something that just gets over looked. Today or 50yrs ago a child with autism would not go unnoticed. It is not the same as ADD or ADHD. So I wish those who are uneducated about autism would stop adding there two cense. This is a serious epidemic that is effecting our future generations. At what point will autism become noticed as a medical illness and be covered by insurance companies?
How do you cope with an autism diagnosis? I've noticed some troubling red flags displayed by my toddler son and fear he may have autism. I'm not jumping to conclusions yet and I made an appointment to see a pediatric psychologist to see if that's true. The waiting now is killing me. I'm wondering how I can deal with all of my emotions about this. I'm terrified of the diagnosis of autism. However, I know that if he does have autism, an early intervention and treatment is critical. When I first saw a list of autism symptoms, I nearly threw up because so many of them described my son. How does a parent cope with this?
What would be your advice about preventing autism? Does the age of the father matter? If you have a child with autism would you recommend having additional children? Other studies, than the one on the Israelis have shown that the biggest risk factor for autism is having it in the family and paternal age is only relevant when there is no family history of the spectrum. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?db=pubmed&cmd=Retrieve&dopt=AbstractPlus&list_uids=16108999&query_hl=10&itool=pubmed_docsum http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?db=pubmed&cmd=Retrieve&dopt=AbstractPlus&list_uids=10732302&query_hl=12&itool=pubmed_docsum http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?db=pubmed&cmd=Retrieve&dopt=AbstractPlus&list_uids=6927656&query_hl=14&itool=pubmed_docsum What about prevention for the sake of the suffering that someone with autism must go through rather than what you might feel as the parent?
What should teachers know about children with autism? I am a student teacher and I would really like some information regarding children with autism and how I can support them in their educational development. What would you say were the most important things that I should know? Thank you to everyone that has answered so far.
where do I find information about adult autism? I am 33 yrs old. My entire adult experience can be characterized by my involvement in alternative healing. My interests started in an attempt to try to heal myself. I have some behavoirs and patterns in my life and other things about me and my life that have been more challenging for me than for others. It has been unclear to me why things in my life are challenging in the ways that they are. Several years ago I saw a woman on Oprah that gave her testimony about learning as an adult that she was autistic. Her sympsoms were the same symptoms that I suffer from. I think that I may be autistic. I have research autism on the internet. Most information that I have come across about the subject is focussed on children. I need information about adults that are diagnosed in adulthood with autism.
What is the best way to organize a classroom to benefit students with autism spectrum disorder? I am moving into a new classroom and new job description next year. I will be teaching four students with autism spectrum disorder in a mobile unit. I am aware that the classroom needs to be structured with defined space for each activity, but haven't seen any concrete examples. Can anyone give me some good ideas or examples? Thanks! Wow! I've gotten such great responses already. :-) I should add that this classroom will have two assistants (a total of three staff members). Students are ages 14 to 20.
How can I support a child with autism with peer relationship? I have a child with very high function autism, and I want to find ways to help him develop friendship with other chidlren. If I find some ways to help him, I am also wondering in what ways does he react to social coaching? Please help. Thank you.
Can a child have autism and still be social? I have been reading up on autism and Asperger's Syndrome a lot lately because we have some concerns about our four year old son. He fits the characteristics of Asperger's Syndrome except for one thing, children with Asperger's are typically known to be very anti-social. Our son is the most social child we have ever seen. In fact we get comments all the time on how out-going and social he is. So my question is, can a child have an autism spectrum disorder and still be social?
What causes Autism or How is it diagnosed to young children? My younger brother is four and he is a twin he was born first and he is the one with autism, why did he get it and not my other brother if usually it can be the youngest twin to have any problems or disabilties and how is it diagnosed what are the symptoms or signs to look for.
What state or city is the best for autism treatment? Our 4 year old son was recently "officially" diagnosed as having autism. We've been doing speech and OT therapy for almost 2 years, but methods like ABA are not very accessible here in north FL - there are just too few therapists in the area. We're considering where we might relocate to obtain additional treatment / therapies, particularly when he starts school next year. Any information on experiences in your area and local school district is much appreciated. Thank you!
Do children with autism have a bigger shaped head? I am researching autism in children under 3 right now. My friend and I have been discussing my son. We believe, my son is showing signs of autism. My friend said he has autistic children in his family and those children have big heads. Like rounder in the back of the head. Does anyone know if this is typical in autism?
What is the likely-hood of my child being born with autism? My step son has the autism disorder. My husband's ex-wife keeps telling me that my child could have this because it is genetic. Is there proof that autism is genetic? Or is she just trying to scare me because she is pissed that we are having a child of our own?
